NYU Robotic Design Team

The NYU Robotics Design Team is a group of multidisciplinary Tandon students who take part in designing and creating innovative robots for the advancement of the field, while also having a positive impact on their school and community.

The student team competes in NASA's Annual Robotic Mining Competition,which requires each student team to design a robot that can mine, collect and deposit raw materials from the surface of Mars. NASA uses this competition as research to find the best collection system for their own mining robot which they design to send to Mars.

In addition, the team dedicates their time to promoting STEM in their local communities. Last academic year, the team worked with a local Girl Scout Troop to promote the STEM field to female middle and high school students. The troop went on to enter the Marine Park First Lego League Qualifier, a real-world engineering challenge competition as the youngest team.

The NYU Robotic Design team is currently raising funds through their crowdfunding page in order to continue its outreach of STEM research and mentoship to local schools and communities for the next academic year.

NYU Prison Education Program

The University's Prison Education Program (NYU PEP) recently received a $1 million, three-year grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.? NYU PEP is a university-wide initiative that offers college learning credits leading to an NYU Associate of Arts Degree in Liberal Studies to incarcerated individuals at the Wallkill Correctional Facility in upstate New York.

The goal of the program is to acknowledge the injustices and inequalities that frame the educational environment.? By integrating an education system within prison, NYU PEP seeks to remove the barriers to higher education for incarcerated people and their families, and to provide its graduates with the proper tools to navigate life after incarceration.

To date, 112 students have taken college credit classes, 42 courses have been taught, and 5 students have graduated from its inaugural class.?
